Photo of poster of M. Gunn"From time to time, whenever you are going to make your mark on the world, someone will turn to you and say in various cautionary tones, 'No one has ever done this before.' The message they are usually trying to deliver is 'You shouldn't even be attempting this.' And/or 'You will fail." And/or "It can't be done.' And/or 'Please, stop.' At NASA, we only did things that had never been done before. That was our job. When you hear these warnings, never argue. Smile pleasantly, and thank them for their valuable input. Then, turn around, and prepare to fortify yourself. In fact, use it as motivation. Just like NASA, you are in the business of moving your own frontier. The only failure is not to try."
